Wind Tower Section Clamp
Clamping Ø 2.0–5.2 m · WLL 50–250 t · no weld-on lugs
Hydraulic clamping ring for lifting and handling tower sections — no weld-on lugs, no shell damage.
Overview
Every tower section has to be lifted several times before it is a tower: off the fabricator's storage frame, onto the transport adapter, off again at site, and finally into position. The traditional way to do that is to weld lifting lugs to the shell — which means welding on a certified pressure-part-thickness steel tube, then cutting the lugs off, then inspecting the area you just welded and cut. That is slow, it needs a welder and an NDT crew at every handover, and it leaves a heat-affected zone exactly where the shell is most highly stressed.
The HEAVYLT tower section clamp does the job without touching the steel. It is a hydraulic clamping ring that grips the outside of the tube, with non-marking pads protecting the coating. Grip increases with load — the ring is mechanically self-locking, so a loss of hydraulic pressure does not release the section — and one clamp body covers a range of diameters through interchangeable contact sets.
It is used with cranes and spreader beams for lifting, and with the tower transport adapter for loading and unloading, which means the same interface appears at every handover in the chain. Units are load tested and supplied with test documentation; certification requirements are confirmed per order.
Key features
- Grips the shell from outside — no welded lugs, no weld removal, no post-lift NDT of the weld area
- Mechanically self-locking: the load increases the grip, so a pressure loss does not drop the section
- Non-marking contact pads protect the coating through every handover
- One clamp body covers a range of diameters with interchangeable contact sets
- Interfaces with cranes, spreader beams and the HEAVYLT tower transport adapter
- Same clamping interface at the yard, on the vehicle and at the site
Applications
- Tower section lifting at fabricator and storage yards
- Loading and unloading tower sections on transport adapters
- Site lifting and installation support
- Repowering and tower replacement handling
FAQ
Why use a clamp instead of welded lifting lugs?
Because welding on the shell means cutting off afterwards and inspecting the area you welded and cut, at every handover, and it leaves a heat-affected zone on a highly stressed part of the tube. The clamp grips the outside instead: no welding, no cut-off, no re-inspection, and the coating stays intact.
What diameters and loads does it cover?
Clamping diameter 2.0 m to 5.2 m through interchangeable contact sets, with working load limits from 50 t to 250 t. That spans the current large onshore and offshore tower sections; outside the range, the ring is quoted to the section drawing.
Is it safe if hydraulic pressure is lost?
Yes. The ring is mechanically self-locking and the grip increases with the load, so a pressure loss does not release the section. Units are load tested and supplied with test documentation, with certification requirements confirmed per order.
Can it be used with our own crane and spreader beam?
Yes — the clamp presents standard lifting interfaces for crane hooks and spreader beams, and it also mounts on the HEAVYLT tower transport adapter so the same clamp serves both lifting and transport handling.
